Wrestle Like A Girl, Inc., (“WLAGâ€) is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to use the sport of wrestling to empower girls and women to become leaders in life. We remove barriers to participation and provide opportunities to wrestle.
Girls’ wrestling is the fastest growing high school sport in the United States. Wrestling builds self- confidence, strengthens physical and mental resilience, and teaches people to persevere through adversity to reach their full potential. As one of the oldest competitive sports in the world1, wrestling has historically only offered these leadership lessons to men and boys. Today, WLAG is opening wrestling to girls and women, leading the push for equal access, equal opportunity, and equal leadership development through wrestling.
Empowerment Camps - WLAG's camp curriculum was designed by a team of experts in youth sport development to introduce the sport of wrestling to girls, and through it, encourage their confidence and leadership development. Over the last four years, WLAG has taught wrestling and leadership skills across 19 states to over 3,000 girls between the ages of 5-18.
State Sanctioning for Girls’ High School Wrestling - Since WLAG's inception in 2016, 23 U.S. states have recognized girls’ wrestling as an official sport, bringing wrestling to over 25,000 girls. During the next three years, WLAG will support the movement to sanction girls’ high school wrestling in 16 U.S. states, providing a full-time coordinator to assist state volunteers with the sanctioning process and the start-up of new high school wrestling programs.
Over the last four years, WLAG has taught wrestling and leadership skills across 19 states to over 3,000 girls between the ages of 5-18.
Collegiate Women’s Wrestling WLAG is leading the bid for NCAA Emerging Sport Status (ESS) alongside the Women’s Collegiate Wresting Coalition (“WCWCâ€). The NCAA’s decision to grant Emerging Sport Status will come in August 2020, with NCAA Championship Status happening as soon as August 2021. As part of this initiative, WLAG will support the production of an NCAA Member Schools Championship Women’s Wrestling Event March 6-7, 2020 at Adrian College (Michigan). This will be the precursor to the NCAA Women’s Wrestling Emerging Sport Status National Event in March 2021, and the official NCAA Women’s Wrestling tournament in March 2022.
Leadership – Sally Roberts is the Founder and CEO of WLAG. She is a U.S. Army combat veteran and 2x World Bronze Medalist in women’s wrestling. WLAG's camps are led by Olympians and elite athletes such as Tela O’Donnell Bacher, 2004 U.S. Olympic Women’s Wrestling Team member and WLAG's National Camp Director and Helen Maroulis, 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist in women’s wrestling. The Wrestle Like A Girl Board of Trustees is chaired by Maryann Bruce, Independent Corporate Director of Amalgamated Bank, and includes David Grevemberg, CEO of the Commonwealth Games Federation; HRH Prince Ali Bin Hussein of Jordan; Mara Gubuan, CEO of the NPO Equality League; Dr. Amanda Stanec, Founder of Move Live Learn, and Lisa Flanary, Chief Growth Officer of Thrivent.
