LAUMER'S LEGION

ABOUT THE GROUP

Take a 103-mile virtual hike along the historic Fort King Road from the former site of Fort Brooke in Tampa to the reconstructed Fort King in Ocala. On this rustic highway, the tragedy of war passed by the many wooden forts guarding this essential supply route. On its pathways trod the booted feet of thousands of soldiers and the bare or moccasin-covered feet of Seminole, red and black, on their way to brutal battles waged to remove Indians from their homes. With its 1827 completion, the historic Fort King Road established itself as the central artery for military and commercial traffic through the heart of Florida. Laumer's Legion honors the late Frank Laumer, who worked tirelessly for more than half a century to raise public awareness to commemorate the Florida Seminole Wars of the 19th Century. The term Legion honors the rugged Roman soldiers who marched the length and breadth of that great empire on purpose-built roads such as the Fort King Military Road.
